Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer took authorized motion Friday to close down a pipeline that carries oil beneath a channel that hyperlinks two of the Nice Lakes. Whitmer's workplace notified the Canadian firm that it was revoking an easement granted in 1953 to increase a roughly 4-mile (6.4-kilometer) part of the pipeline via the Straits of Mackinac. The transfer escalates a multiyear battle over Line 5, which is a part of Enbridge's Lakehead community of pipelines that carries oil from western Canada to refineries within the U.S. and Ontario.
